Never in the annals of world history, the countries of the world are forced to think smarter for sustainable ecological and natural resource management. Colonization, urbanization, and massive people’s migration have dramatically changed the way societies work and live. This is particularly true in the case of the world’s smallest of the continents, the Australia that was worst heat due to #climate_change.
Vast sections of the land, including the forest area, have been cleared to build urban centers, and grow pasture for the herd, which in turn had a lasting impact on the forest cover in the continent in the past decade. The continent turned barren with the deforestation and the #Green_cover on the land had dropped down to 17%, the lowest ever for the size of the continent. Severe climate change effects have resulted in a draught, acute water shortage, threatening food security, ecological balance, and employment in the countryside.
The Brisbane city council, for example, has initiated #green_commitment to reduce the #carbon_footprint with acts like planting #water_smart_trees, enhancing the biodiversity by improving the natural habitat for fauna, and smarter ideas to reduce carbon emission such as installing mercury-based street lamps, reduction in usage of asphalt mixture, adopting smart technologies to make the best use of rain/stormwater for street plants. The ambitious plan spanning a period of a decade and a half from the year 2017-2031 appears to have been an act of one-man show because the community engagement in these activities is seriously lacking. The top-down decision-making strategies of not providing active participation of communities would be a serious lacuna of the project as per the studies of the Melbourne School of government. The study at the end suggested that cities must learn from the community management strategies of the indigenous cultural practices of Australia as they are built on the principles of collective decision making, consensus building, and effective involvement of the grassroots by assigning ownership to the communities.
